Description

A kappa is a species of water demon which dwells in the rivers and lakes of Japan. These creatures, although the size of a child, posess supernatural strength and are able to overpower the strongest victim, whom they will then drag under water to consume from the inside out.
According to legend, there are two ways to escape from the clutches of a kappa.
On top of their heads, kappas have a bowl-like depression full of water, which is also the source of their magical strength. A wise person walking by a river will always keep a wary eye on the surface. As soon as there's any sign of a kappa rising, this person must bow deeply. The kappa, being a polite and honorable creature for a demon, will return the bow, spilling the water on its head and losing its power. This will give the person enough time to escape.
The second method involves carving the person's name and age on a cucumber and throwing it in the water. The kappa, which has a weakness for cucumbers, will remember the donor's name and spare him/her in the future.

Great texture, I'm not crazy about the blurry background, but it does make the kappa stand out. I'll be following your bestiary series.

That's very preciselly done, even the simulation of shallow depth of field and deformations by water.

Your B/W style just reminded me I still have unfinished some paintings on my harddisk. Perhaps I would release them also in the BW :)

Big kind of biting turtle that eats french bread. Cool.

The water could use more contrast to make it fit the creature.

Thanks for all the coments (and votes! )
Bellas and Kyena--
I wanted to do the whole myBestiary series in black and white.... but I've been thinking that some pieces might indeed look good in color. We'll see....
Michelle--

Robert Mekis and ThruMyEyez--
If photographers of your caliber think the depth of field works, then I'm happy!
Kaduflyer--
LOL!
Artoonator--
I guess the description was a bit too long and complicated for you...
Just kidding! About the water, it took so much work, trial and error, and frustration to finally get it to look close to what I wanted, that I dare not tamper with it any further.... plus, I totally disagree with you. :)

Again, thanks for taking the time to look at this piece!
