Description

I've just started my very own bestiary....only, instead of doing it alphabetically, I'm going by order of preference (gryphons are my favourites).
Done entirely in Photoshop_6.

Done in Photoshop?! The moment I looked at the drawing I thought it was ebony pencil on paper. Wow!

Extremely well-rendered textures. I particularly like the wings and the claws.

+7!

Hi Jie,

What can I say other than wow! Great texturing and detail! Off centered would have created a bit more interest. But oh well, it's too good for me to care anyways!

Can't wait to see your others! ~ Joe Ayotte

Awww, his paws are so huge and fuzzy.

This is a great picture. I especially like his wings -- they're so nicely rendered! (It's also nice to see the wings NOT spread out, for once) It's like I can feel the tremendous strength in those wings.

Exelent execution, this looks like where 100% pencils, but if this is 100% photoshop doesnt go in Paintings section?
Doesnt matter where this goes you got my 9/9, i can see no flaws, the wings are my favorite part, they have such a cool perspective (thumbup)

Everybody, thanx for the nice critiques! I can't wait to start on the next one.

F0rk0: before I learned Photoshop, that's exactly what I used; ebony pencils, charcoal, and dry pastels. I guess the style kind of stuck with me!

DarkMaiden: You've just made my day! (hell, you've just made my whole week!!) Thanks!

Joe-Ayotte: Thanx! ...yeah, it's centered because of it's purpose. A bestiary is kind of like an illustrated encyclopedia of beasts.

teseracto, keiiii, Hybridos: I'm glad you like the wings.I did spend a lot of extra time on them, although I'm still not 100% happy with them. Turns out it's very hard to figure out how to put wings on the torso of a mammal, and I think the bone/muscle structure is not quite as it should be... but the general effect is exactly what I wanted, so I guess it's OK.

Thanx again for all your comments!

great shading. this looks more like a pencil drawing than a photoshop one- wonderful technique! I like how you've drawn the wings and the rocks are just fantastic!

Very good rendering--particularly the perspective drawn into the wings. Nice range of values, though it trend toward 'light.' If you go a bit further with this one, stronger shadows--more dark tone generally--might add drama. Great job!

This is amazing. I don't have anything to say other than this is possibly my favorite drawing ever.

Not the most fearsome griffin - but cute. A little cartoony, which might have been your intend. I would have made the neck a little longer... yes. Other than that - rock on!

WOW O_O This is very professional, and yep, I thought it was a drawing too until I read the description! I reckon that makes it even better! I admire artists who give a traditional look to their digital pieces!

The wings are perfect, in my opinion. Normally I'd think the wings go up more to where the shoulderblades are, but where you've got them looks quite plausible to me. Time well spent! And that's the first time I've ever seen a Gryphon done with tail feathers! Very original!

I think the rock may be too smooth a surface to seem completely real- almost like a zoo habitat, if zoos held myth creatures. :p But, it still looks very good and well rendered.

Keep up the great work Jie! I look forward to the rest of your series! ^_^

That is an awesome picture but i have to ask did you scan in a pic you drew and started off of that?

Avatar Jie

 10/08/04 @631

Nope! I actually opened a blank document in photoshop and started sketching away with my Wacom. No scanning.

Of all the parts of the Gryphon, I think I like the tail part the most. It looks original... even I can't think of it!!! The pose of the wings are wisely chosen too! Great work, Jie!!!

Flawless - the wings do look a tad mechanical, but the work on the fur is down right drop dead amazing! ~:0 [+10]

No technical art comments, I just love this image.

Creature-wise (it's been commented before) putting tail feathers on this beast looks great. I've been trying to draw a gryphon I like for a while, without any results worth sharing, this one just raised the bar on the quality gryphon I am to draw someday.
